Elastoplastic contact between randomly rough surfaces.

چکیده

I have developed a theory of contact mechanics between randomly rough surfaces. The solids are assumed to deform elastically when the stress sigma is below the yield stress sigma(Y), and plastically when sigma reaches sigma(Y). I study the dependence of the (apparent) area of contact on the magnification. I show that in most cases the area of real contact A is proportional to the load. If the rough surface is self-affine fractal (Hurst exponent H) the whole way up to the lateral size L of the nominal contact area, then (assuming no plastic deformation) A approximately L(H).

Elastoplastic contact of rough surfaces: a line contact model for boundary regime of lubrication

This paper introduces an improved friction model accounting for elastoplastic behavior of interacting asperities along contiguous rough surfaces for a line contact solution. It is based on Greenwood and Tripp’s original boundary friction model and specifically tailored for a boundary regime of lubrication. The numerical solution of Reynolds’ equation is achieved by implementing Elrod’s cavitati...

Contact mechanics for randomly rough surfaces

When two solids are squeezed together they will in general not make atomic contact everywhere within the nominal (or apparent) contact area. This fact has huge practical implications and must be considered in many technological applications. In this paper I briefly review the basic theories of contact mechanics. I consider in detail a recently developed contact mechanics theory. I derive bounda...

Comment on "elastoplastic contact between randomly rough surfaces".

In a recent Letter, Persson [1] suggested a new model of contact between arbitrary randomly rough surfaces. He considered also fractal surfaces which he characterized above the lower cutoff only by their dimension Df and an additional constant. He argued that in the framework of the model, the area of real contact A in most cases is proportional to the load P. However, there are examples which ...

Partial-slip frictional response of rough surfaces

If two elastic bodies with rough surfaces are first pressed against each other and then loaded tangentially, sliding will occur at the boundary of the contact area while the inner parts may still stick. With increasing tangential force, the sliding parts will expand while the sticking parts shrink and finally vanish. In this paper, we study the fractions of the contact area, tangential force an...

Insect adhesion on rough surfaces: analysis of adhesive contact of smooth and hairy pads on transparent microstructured substrates

Insect climbing footpads are able to adhere to rough surfaces, but the details of this capability are still unclear. To overcome experimental limitations of randomly rough, opaque surfaces, we fabricated transparent test substrates containing square arrays of 1.4 µm diameter pillars, with variable height (0.5 and 1.4 µm) and spacing (from 3 to 22 µm). Smooth pads of cockroaches (Nauphoeta ciner...
